I'm Dr. Vanessa R. Brooks
I spent 14 years in pastoral ministry and 15 years as a social services professional pouring everything I had into serving others. I preached. I counseled. I led. I solved problems no one else could solve. I created frameworks. I transformed lives.
And I was exhausted.
Because here's what no one tells you when you're an educated, credentialed woman in a helping profession: you're expected to give your expertise away. Ministry told me serving meant sacrifice—that charging for my wisdom was somehow unholy. My professional career paid me a fraction of what I was worth because "this is service work." I overfunctioned in both spaces, burned out in both spaces, and eventually had to walk away from both.

After retiring from both professions, I went back to school. I earned my master's degree in Counseling, then my doctorate in Executive Leadership in Mental Health and Human Services. Combined with my BA in Human Services Administration and decades of lived experience, I had the credentials. And that's when everything clicked: It wasn't me. It was my wiring.
Decades of conditioning had trained my brain to equate expertise with service, authority with arrogance, and compensation with greed.
